HBK’s Iowa City office assisted in preparing concept plans for proposed improvements to the Center Street Dam and Gateway Park Dam in Cedar Falls, IA. One option calls for white-water features in the river at Gateway Park to replace a deteriorating and hazardous low-head dam along with bank improvements.
Other options were presented at the 2nd public input meeting to include improvements to the upstream Center Street Dam to provide wider range of appeal to various users – kayakers, canoers, tubers, and spectators.
The team (AECOM of Waterloo, McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group of Denver, Co, and HBK) will present the alternatives and public feedback to the Cedar Falls City Council next month. The council may then direct preliminary design to move forward on a preferred option. This city would also seek grants and other funding sources and some improvements could begin as early as next year.
