This position performs diversified and complex work requiring developed skills, knowledge, and expertise to plan, analyze, and complete assigned duties and to maintain familiarity with new developments in the field of expertise. Associate manages, supervises, and directs multidiscipline staff in the production of quality projects and maintaining profitable operations. Associate typically directs/mentors scientists in professional, technical, and operational best practices.

General Characteristics:

  • Directs multidiscipline staff in successfully completing assigned project tasks, including reports, design, analysis, document preparation and production, contract services and field inspections, coordinating with a project team, client communication, proposal coordination, business development and presentations.
  • Develops and evaluates reports, plans, and regulatory criteria for a variety of projects and activities.
  • Devises new approaches to problems encountered and performs work that involves conventional practices but includes a variety of complex features, such as conflicting and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Work involves collaborative efforts with multidiscipline professionals within the project team and includes the ability to elaborate and integrate a series of independent and often interrelated professional actions to attain desired project goals.
  • Devises new approaches to problems encountered and performs work that involves conventional practices but includes a variety of complex features, such as conflicting and difficult coordination requirements.
  • Typical duties and responsibilities may include:
    • Taking a primary role in business development within assigned area of expertise.
    • Using advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices of sciences and disciplines to complete assignments.
    • Working on a major project or several projects of moderate to advanced scope with complex features.
    • Staying informed of new methods and developments affecting the Company, as well as recommending new practices or changes in emphasis of environmental programs or applications.  

 Technical Responsibilities:

  • Assists upper level management and staff as a technical specialist or advisor.
  • Carries out assignments requiring the development of new and/or improved techniques, procedures, processes, materials or products.
  • Requires an advanced level of knowledge in their field of expertise to include a thorough understanding of the environmental laws, rules, and regulations that affect the development of a project.
  • Analyzes problems, establishes project objectives, and utilizes available resources in order to successfully complete a project.
  • Provides professional expertise on major projects.
  • Review complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • May serve as a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager consistent with experience, or as a Lead Project Environmental staff on major projects.
  • Directs a multidiscipline staff in supporting functions as required and applies sound and diverse knowledge of environmental principles and practices in a board array of assignments and related fields.
  • Responsible for planning, budgeting, reviewing and evaluating project progress and performance.
  • Recognized by professional peers within the discipline area of specialty.
  • Typical duties and responsibilities may include:
    • Directing and supervising a large project staff in supporting functions and overseeing technical quality of work by employees assigned to a project.
    • Supervising, coordinating, reviewing, and approval of finished project reports, narratives, and other required supporting material.
    • Reviewing and approving scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
    • Preparing proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for environmental projects or programs.
    • Recruiting and training staff.
    • Assisting in marketing and proposal presentation.
    • Preparing administrative reports and coordinating environmental Program activities with technical and administrative support sections.  

Direction Received:

  • Acts independently regarding environmental methods and complexities; performs more visible environmental work with responsibility for independent action; and makes decisions and recommendations that impact Program activities.
  • Independently applies extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields.
  • Receives supervision and guidance relating to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters, as well as direction on unusual conditions and developments.

Communication Skills:

  • Possess advanced oral, presentation, and written communication skills.
  • Coordinates with a diversified project team and with clients for proposal completion, marketing, presentations, and management of other discipline related activities, requiring extensive communication and coordination skills.
  • Directs and presents at project presentations, client meetings and workshops.
  • Completes proposals, written reports, and undertake marketing efforts to improve backlog.
  • Consults and works directly with clients.
  • Represents the organization in communications and conferences pertaining to broad aspects of environmental assignments.
  • Serves and expands relationship as a trusted advisor to clients while operating in an ethical and safe manner.   

Education and Work Experience:

  • Requires an accredited bachelors or master’s degree in environmental science, ecology, environmental planning, or related field required.
  • Familiarity with GIS preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Requires 7+ years prior work experience within the field and specialty required for the position.  
  • Engaged in life-long learning to maintain knowledge of contemporary issues.

Licensure and Certification:

  • Organizational membership or a professional certification track, as required. 

Professional Activities:

  • Active membership in a career-oriented professional or Program-related organization, including participated in developing professional papers or presentations.

Community Activities:

  • Participation in community service or charitable organizations is desired.

The associate must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
