ComEd Roosevelt Collection Complete Electrical Service Design
In preparation of the development of Roosevelt Collection, a mixed-use development currently being built by Centrum Properties and Walsh Construction, HBK was involved with a significant number of engineering –related activities.
- Freight Tunnel Bulkhead Design for Wells Street and Financial Place Freight Tunnel Abandonment on Roosevelt Collection Property. HBK performed engineering consulting services in connection with the Chicago Freight Tunnel System, in the area bounded by Taylor Street, Roosevelt Road, Wells Street and Financial Place.
- Freight Tunnel Access Shaft Design and Dewatering System Design. HBK prepared detailed engineering drawings for a permanent access shaft and dewatering system for CDOT-Division of Engineering per an agreement between Centrum and CDOT regarding the abandonment of the Wells Street Freight tunnel.
- Freight Tunnel Construction Support and Observation. HBK was contracted by various contractors and telecom providers to perform the splicing and construction observation within the Chicago Freight and Trolley Tunnel System.
- Engineering services in connection with vibration monitoring for the Roosevelt Collection Development. This project included setting up (4) four seismographs near Roosevelt Road and Taylor Street. HBK performed the future relocating of the sensors during their morning and evening surveys of the tunnel.
- Engineering Consulting Services in connection with the design and permitting of ComEd's proposed service to Roosevelt Square in Chicago, Illinois. HBK was contracted to perform a detailed field survey of one existing ComEd manhole within the Project limits to determine its size.
Transmission
ComEd West Loop 345kV Chicago Optimization Project
Completed in summer of 2008, the West Loop 345kV Chicago Optimization Program was the single largest transmission upgrade ever undertaken by Commonwealth Edison.
The West Loop Program was constructed to handle the increasing load demand and future capacity requirements of downtown Chicago and near north neighborhoods. The program included the construction of the new West Loop Substation, comprised of a 138kV AIS Bus and a 345kV GIS Bus, three miles of underground 138kV transmission connecting two substations on the near north side, and five miles of underground 345kV transmission connecting to two major substations on the near south side. Both the 138kV and 345kV transmission lines necessitated crossings of the Chicago River via one engineered tunnel on the 138kV side and four Jack and Bore casing pipe installations on the 345kV side. Construction of the West Loop 345kV program took approximately five years from planning to completion
