Internship Program
HBK Engineering offers a robust Internship Program that provides students a real world application of their classroom studies. Students interning at HBK receive dedicated mentoring and hands-on training from some of the industry’s best engineers. HBK interns take an active role in the organization, obtaining experience across the board, from design work in the office to survey work in the field.
The Engineering Internship Program takes place year-round. As an intern, school is the first priority. HBK works with students to develop a schedule that allows them to balance both school and work. LICENSED CIVIL ENGINEER
HBK Engineering is searching for a Project Engineer. Our firm offers a professional work environment, excellent benefits, competitive salary and growth potential.
Description:
- This position offers the opportunity to lead a project team consisting of engineers and designers involved in the design, modification, and analysis of new and existing utility systems.
- Work on challenging assignments that include investigating, trouble-shooting, and solving a wide variety of civil engineering related issues.
- Act as the Civil team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of civil engineering work.
- Perform designs for utility infrastructure using subsurface utility engineering guidelines.
- Perform designs for civil site grading and drainage.
- Lead efforts to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
- Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
- Prepare documentation for design input for drawing production.
- Interface with vendors to prepare materials and equipment purchase specifications for client recommendations.
- Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements.
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation.
Qualifications:
- A BSCE degree required, MSCE preferred.
- PE license required in the State of Pennsylvania
Essential skills and experience:
- Knowledge of engineering standards.
- Experience in the design of subsurface utility engineering systems in urban and rural environments.
- Detailed research and investigation of existing site drawings, plans and maps to provide professional assessment of the SUE project sites.
- Experience with the construction and installation of below grade infrastructure
- Three or more years experience in leading an engineering design team through all phases of a project design.
- Technically knowledgeable of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems to execute systems design.
- Overhead and underground electrical utility distribution infrastructure design (primary or secondary)
- Experience working within and utilizing existing utility standard designs
- Experience with creating construction work package designs, scheduling and material procurement.
- Familiarity with Horizontal Direction Drilling designs and installations.
- Familiarity with contractor’s means and methods for subsurface installations.
- Experience with complex urban underground utility infrastructure.
- Experience with serving as firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
- Experience in reviewing design drawings created by others.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation, and Microsoft Office Suite
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- PMP Certification.
- Construction experience a plus.

- Act as the Electrical team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of electrical engineering work.
- Lead efforts to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
- Coordinate systems design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
- Prepare documentation for design input for drawing production.
- Interface with vendors to prepare materials and equipment purchase specifications for client recommendations.
- Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements.
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation.
Qualifications:

- Overhead and underground electrical utility distribution infrastructure design (primary or secondary)
- Experience working within and utilizing existing utility standard designs
- Experience with creating construction work package designs, scheduling, unit estimating systems, outage analysis and joint use work.
- Experience with cable and joint replacement as well as line and facility upgrade projects
- Experience with complex urban underground network systems including circuit development, neutral networks and switch layouts
- Experience with serving as firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
- Experience in reviewing design drawings created by others.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
- PMP Certification.
- Construction and start-up experience a plus.
- Commissioning experience a plus.
- Owner specific design interfaces / tools, for example ComEd has TED, Passport
- Involvement with system planning / system improvements

Individual would demonstrate the ability to meet any challenge from conceptual design studies through final engineering, design, and project management services as well as a unique base of expertise with transmission line industry practices and standards.

STRUCTURAL & GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER
HBK Engineering is searching for a Structural / Geotechnical Engineer. Our firm offers a professional work environment, excellent benefits, competitive salary and growth potential.
The position requires:
- B.S. Degree in civil / structural / geotechnical engineering
- Current Licensed Structural Engineer registration in the State of Illinois required
- 10+ years combined experience in structural and geotechnical engineering
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Preparation of technical memos, reports, construction specifications and other written documentation
- Consulting background preferred
- Ability to travel, as needed
- Demonstrated ability to perform and manage diversified tasks through the life-cycle of projects
With emphasis on:
- The ability to apply engineering theories, techniques and analysis to structural and geotechnical engineering designs
- Understanding of industry design codes including AISC, ASCE, UBC and IBC
- The fundamental knowledge of principles of geotechnical engineering, soil and rock mechanics, earthquake engineering, and groundwater hydrology required
With design / field experience in:
- Earth and rock engineering
- De-watering operations
- Slope stability and earth stabilization operations
